Paper submission format
Symposium: The Symposium / panel paper of 1500 words, (including references), allows for discussion on a topic from different perspectives. Each symposium will be organized by a chairperson with 3-4 presenters. The symposium is a 90-minute team discussion around issues where different points of view, approaches, debates or analysis of the same problem are presented, with 30 minutes of discussion with the audience.
Single Oral presentation
This presentation format is of 20 minutes duration followed by 10 minutes of questions/discussion. The proposal should consist of an abstract (300 words) and an extended summary (1200 words, including references).

Posters will be grouped conceptually and scheduled for 60-minute sessions. During a poster session each poster presenter is expected to give a 5-minute introduction to the poster. Proposals should consist of an abstract (500 words) only without an extended summary.

Location of the Symposium

South Africa was colonised in 1652 by the Dutch. After years of slavery, racial separation/apartheid democracy was achieved in 1994. The iconic global leader Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected president of SA. South Africa is country of contrast and diversity and is home to a rainbow nation. South Africa is despite the abundance of goods and natural resources, its remarkable progress in the field of industry and manufacturing and its rich indigenous science and technology practices, is still on the list of developing countries. South Africa is seen as Africa’s reliable partner in the global struggle for a just and peaceful world. In 1999, that is 25 years ago, South Africa hosted the 9th IOSTE conference at the University of Durban Westville. Since then South Africa has hosted various important international conferences, such as the founding conference of the AU, the Commonwealth, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the UN Conference on Racism and the World Summit on Sustainable Development. South Africa has hosted the Rugby world cup in 1995, the ICC cricket world cup in 2003 and the 2010 soccer world cup. South Africa has an established track record in hosting major international events.
A major advantage of South Africa as a conference destination is that the country boosts the world-famous Kruger-National Park with the Big 5 animals amongst other tourist attractions and is an ideal gateway to neighbouring countries, also noted for their wildlife tourism and to the continent as a whole. Hosting the IOSTE conference in South Africa will not only boost tourism and assist with job creation, it will foster a sense of community among STE researchers locally and globally and improve and develop STE in response to current and future needs.
The university of Kwa-Zulu Natal is a premier university of African scholarship and is one of the top three ranked universities in 2022, by academic performance, in South Africa among its 21 universities. Globally UKZN is ranked at 358 out of the total of 3000 higher education institutions. The School of Education is housed at the Edgewood campus and is actively engaged with policy-making in education in South Africa and contributes to the international profile of the university through participation in international conferences, teaching international students, hosting international visitors and publishing in international books and journals.
