PhD Candidate Scoops Community Builder of the Year Award

PhD candidate in the School of Education Ms Phakamile Mazibuko is proud to have received the Community Builder of the Year award at the Sebenza Women’s Awards 2023.

The awards recognise outstanding achievements in various fields, including the arts, business, education, the environment, health and wellness, public service, social justice, and sports.

Her foundation, the Phakamile Mazibuko Foundation has assisted more than 1 500 Grade 12 learners to gain university admission in South Africa and beyond. ‘I’m honoured to have received this award that embodies my values of community involvement. Improving community members’ lives is something I’m passionate about,’ she said.

She thanked God for enabling her to achieve the seemingly impossible and expressed gratitude for the votes and support she received from others who share her beliefs.

Mazibuko added that the highlight of the day was sharing this moment with her mother. ‘I got to the stage and turned around to ask her to join me. I wanted to thank her for all the sacrifices she has made over the years.’

Mazibuko also expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, colleagues, and the Ulundi community for their support, as well as the UKZN community. She encouraged young people, particularly women, to continue believing and working hard, as the dots will eventually connect.
