Mdabe who is also part of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Team realised that issues that are rarely dealt within the community and at home affect most of the learners. ‘We agreed to start a project in the school, with the idea of helping learners with the social issues they face as young women. We introduced the project and learners who were interested applied. We discussed a number of social issues that closely affect them as girls,’ she explained.
The club remains active with the most recent event being the Pink Drive that raises awareness of breast cancer and the need for regular screening. Learners were taught how to do self-examinations and where to seek help if they suspect any breast abnormalities.
‘Previously, there was no forum for learners to discuss such health issues. This year we hope to create awareness around human trafficking and teenage pregnancies. These social issues need to be discussed openly in safe spaces,’ said Mdabe.
