Youth Manager in the municipality Mr Sikhumbuzo Shabalala said that the purpose of the exhibition was to ‘invite youth/high school learners in the area to showcase their science work and to share knowledge on how science, mathematics and technology can be relevant to improve their school performance.’

Learners were also given the opportunity to meet government entities such as the Dube Trade Port and National Development Agency (NDA) and discuss employment and bursary opportunities.

One of the pioneers and facilitators of the exhibition was UKZN alumnus and local teacher, Mr Luthando Molefe. ‘This is an annual celebration to empower high school learners and future young leaders with knowledge and skills within the science industry. We plan to bring more exhibitors from the business sector and educational institutions in order for more high school learners to participate in the exhibition,’ he said.

Senior Lecturer in Science Education and Academic Leader for Community Engagement in the School, Dr Angela James said, ‘We are very grateful as UKZN to have been part of this initiative. This is a wonderful opportunity for science learners to develop their knowledge and skills for the future. The School of Education also assisted with application forms for learners and postgraduate application forms for teachers to further their studies.’
