The CDA is a student-led community outreach organisation, initiated by the Dean and Head of the School of Education Professor Thabo Msibi. It aims to uplift the living standard of communities in and around Pinetown, targeting orphanages, old age homes, disadvantaged families and previously disadvantaged schools. The Chief Executive Officer of the Edgewood branch is Mr Mthobisi Shwabede.
Education students Ms Shongani Dladla and Ms Snenhlanhla Nxumalo under the mentorship of Mr Bukhosi Nhlakanipho Mchunu, took part in the day’s festivities. Fellow student, Ms Phakamile Mazibuko’s motivational talk encouraged the children to never give up and to fulfil their goals.
‘It was wonderful spending the day with the children playing indigenous games and sharing with them the significance of Freedom Day. Their spirits were uplifted and they were inspired,’ said Dladla.
Donations were collected from students and lecturers on the Edgewood campus. ‘Our biggest sponsor was Dr Roshanthni Subrayen who bought gifts for 68 kids. We appreciate her efforts and all the support from the Edgewood campus family. We are grateful to St Vincent’s for giving us an opportunity to spoil the kids for a day,’ added Dladla.
The CDA is planning further community engagement activities in the future.
